An Oregon man was rescued alive after crashing his truck into a ravine thanks to his dog. The Baker County Sheriff's Office said that Brandon Garrett was driving on U.S. Forest Service Road 39 when he lost control of his truck around a curve and crashed down an embankment on June 2.
His truck landed on its side at the bottom of the ravine in a shallow stream.
One of Garrett's four dogs escaped from the truck and ran four miles to a camp where his friends were staying. Garrett's friends knew something was wrong and organized a search for their missing friend.
Garrett's family found his truck on the morning of June 3 but could not reach him due to the terrain. They called 911, and multiple agencies were dispatched to assist. Sheriff Travis Ash found Garrett, along with his three other dogs, about 100 yards from the crash site.
Volunteers from the Pine Valley Rural Fire Department and employees with the U.S. Forest Service used chainsaws to clear a path through the brush, allowing Search and Rescue personnel to reach Garrett.
Garret was secured in a rescue basket, and members of the Baker County Search and Rescue Ropes Team used a highline rope system to pull him back up to the roadway. An ambulance rushed him to a nearby Life Flight helicopter, which airlifted him to the hospital.
Authorities did not provide details about his injuries or his condition.
